DORING RIVERAFTING:
The Doring River originates in the majestic Hex River Mountains towards the northeast of one of the most fertile areas in South Africa named after the goddess of agriculture, Ceres. This seasonal river, fed by the pounding rains that hit the Western Cape during winter is truly the flagship of the Cape’s white water rivers. The Ceres Karoo is normally an arid, dry region, but it transforms into a wild, raging river in winter.
The expedition:
Rafting on the Doring River, only 4 hours from Cape Town which caters to various London, Paris or Rome flights
, is a thrilling and exciting experience. We encounter some great grade 3 rapids en route and some still water provides ample time to admire the beautiful gorges that makes the Ceres- Karoo so special.
We will meet at our stone house on Friday evening, where a wholesome braai will warm us against the night chills of the area. Early the next morning we will depart to our launching spot 30 km’s up stream. After a safety speech, we will board our 2-man inflatable canoes and head into the wild waters of the Doring River. Lunch is served en route and we will overnight next to the river in a cave that provides shelter against the cold. Be sure to bring protection, as it can get very nippy at night.
After breakfast on Sunday morning, we continue down the river and finish our rafting adventure at the stone house where we will have lunch at circa 13h00. You are welcome to depart back to Cape Town after lunch.
Equipment and Guides:
We make use of 2-man inflatable canoes (crocs), built to handle the great rapids we encounter en route. All other equipment including PFD’s (life jackets), paddles, dry bags and cooler bags are included. We also supply helmets, but please bring your own wetsuit.
Our guides are professionals in their field and share an uncommon passion for rafting. Your safety and enjoyment are their main priority and will bend over backwards to ensure maximum enjoyment of this great river. All the food, cooking equipment and other necessities will be transported on the guide boats and a safety kayaker will ensure that every body can enjoy the rapids with confidence.
